Banking

As you will likely be in the US for a long period of time, opening a US bank account is a sensible option. However, you can only do this in person because as an international student you will need to present your ID and visa documents to open an account. To avoid your home bank charging you each time you use your card when you first arrive in the US, Monzo is a good option to use in the interim as they do not charge for transactions in the US, you use your card as you would at home and the accounts are free to open, you just need to download the Monzo app to start.

When you arrive in the US, if your university has a bank branch on campus this will be your best option. If the university does not have a branch, you can create an account at a regular bank like Wells Fargo, Bank of America, etc. You need your student visa, passport, and I-20 form. We recommend having a US account with a US billing address. Talking to your teammates/coach/international department to ask for some recommendations for a US bank in the area is a good idea. Note, if you are under 18, you may need a parent with you to open the account.
