Key terminology

When you visit a doctor or need medical assistance in the US, you will be billed for this. If you have already shown your insurance card, the visit has likely gone through your insurance company, if not, you would have to call the doctors office to get the bill reissued through insurance. Below are some key terms and information.
Premium
The amount you pay for your insurance policy.
Deductible
The amount you pay out-of-pocket before your insurance begins to cover costs.
Copayment (Copay)
A fixed fee you pay for specific services, such as a doctor’s visit or prescription. Coinsurance: The percentage of costs you share with the insurance company after you’ve paid your deductible.
Out-of-Pocket Maximum
The maximum amount you’ll pay during a policy period, after which the insurance covers 100% of covered services.
In-Network vs. Out-of-Network
Insurance plans have networks of preferred providers. In-network care is typically cheaper. Out-of-network care may cost more and might not be covered fully. Often schools will have a doctor’s office, like a GP, on campus. If you have purchased the school’s policy, this will almost certainly be in-network. This location should be your first option if you need to see someone. If your school does not have one, speak to teammates, friends or ask coach for recommendations of where to go.
Preventive Services
Many plans cover preventive services, such as vaccinations and screenings, at no additional cost.
Emergency Services
Check how your plan handles emergency care, especially when traveling or outside of the network.
Getting treatment with the team
Any treatment you receive as part of being a student athlete in the athletics building/at practice/games is covered and is free. For example, your school may provide access to physiotherapists, nutritionists, psychologists, etc. All of this is part of being a student athlete, you do not need your insurance information to access this treatment.
