Academic advising

Academic advising

When you get to school you will be assigned an academic advisor to help you with course selection and planning of your training. Some schools may assign you one before and have you meet them online.

Often, there are rules for how often new students must meet with their advisor. They are of great help to you in planning your studies and can give advice if you have difficulty with a class, or if you need to change course choices. If you have trouble completing a course or your grades drop, they help to make changes so that you will pass your classes and keep up with the courses included in your degree plan.

For student-athletes, the coach is also an important contact for this. They are usually the one who is the primary contact and the person to turn to for advice. The coach can provide advice regarding course selection, rate of study, internships, etc. They act as a reminder for you when you are going to find a proper balance between academic studies and the sport itself. Experience shows that the coach can often help find both internships and scholarships for students.
