For most students, we recommend purchasing the insurance policy your school offers.
This will meet all the schools’ minimum requirements. For some students, it may be
included in your scholarship, and for others, it may be a requirement for you to purchase
this policy.
In addition, most American schools will have insurance that covers their student-athletes
should an accident happen during training or a match/tournament organized by the
school. In that case, it will likely be stated in the scholarship papers.
If insurance is included in your scholarship, speak to coach to see if any forms may need filling out.
If insurance is not included in your scholarship and therefore you need to purchase the policy,
again, the best person to speak to is your coach. They will have all the necessary
information on where you can purchase the policy. If you are unsure if it is included or not,
check your scholarship papers or contact your placement person.
If insurance is not included in your scholarship, at some schools, you are completely free
to choose which insurance cover you have yourself, as opposed to purchasing the policy your school offers. In this case, you would likely need to sign an insurance waiver and then show
proof that what you have purchased meets the school’s minimum policy requirements. In
some cases, schools may not offer an insurance policy. If either of these are the case,
below are some companies that offer health insurance to international students.
Remember, you need to check to see if you will be covered for intercollegiate athletics in
the policy you choose, if your school does not already cover you. This may be an addon
with some companies. Please ensure you purchase primary insurance.
You could also use a broker such as
Sports Scholarship Insurance who can assist you with choosing a policy with a third party. They also offer contents insurance as a bolt-on.
