Create Duolingo account and register for test

The Duolingo test is important in the application process for schools in the United States and it is helpful that you take the test as early as possible to set yourself up for a smooth process. You can take the test anytime and anywhere, as long as you are alone, with good internet and a laptop with a good camera. You will be filmed throughout the test so they can make sure you are the person taking the test.

The test takes around 45 minutes but be sure to set aside at least an hour. Make sure you sit in a location with quiet surroundings so that you are not disturbed during the test. It is important, for example, that no one knocks on the door, comes in the room or calls you on your mobile phone during the test.

Before taking the test, we strongly encourage you to familiarize yourself with the test rules and requirements. If you break any of the rules or requirements, Duolingo may not certify your test result and you will have to purchase a new test. Read the rules and requirements here.

The Duolingo English Test requires the use of a phone as a secondary camera. The phone records test takers’ computer screens and keyboards, providing additional data about the testing environment. Watch this video about how you should set up your phone during the test.

Register, practice and pay for the test

  1. Click here to create an account and start your preparations.  
  2. Click “Test Info” in the menu to access resources about how the test works, the scoring system and also the Official Duolingo test guide. 
  3. Click “Practice” to take a 45-minute practice test, or select one of the Quick Practice options to improve your skills in one of the four test categories: Speaking, Reading, Listening or Writing.
  4. Once you are ready to take your first test, click “My Tests” in the menu and then “Buy Now” to purchase a test. Keep in mind that after you have purchased the test you have 21 days to complete it. It is worth looking over the rules and requirements one last time before taking the test to make sure you don’t encounter any issues.
