How to create your soccer highlight video
Now you have filmed your games, it's time to put together your highlight video!
What to include:
- Include the best content of you. Use clips that represent you best as a player.
- Make the first 30 seconds the best it can possibly be so coaches will be intrigued and continue to watch.
- Make it obvious as to which one you are in the video. Explain or show position, shirt colour & number.
- Add in a slide to introduce who you are before the highlight video begins. The slide only needs your position etc. Do not use an introduction video, this wastes time on the video. The slide is optional.
- Use footage from several different matches.
- Include build up play if it is needed.
- Refer to the links below for what content to add for a specific position.
What not to include:
- Use clips where you are just running.
- Use clips where you are taking a throw-in. Unless you have a very long throw and it leads to an end product!
- Exclude any obvious mistakes.
- Around the 5-6 minute mark should be sufficient for a highlight tape. The max length of your highlight video should be no more than 10 minutes.
- Use bad camera quality or footage –if the video quality is low, we will not be able to use the footage to promote you.
- Leave a certain clip running for a long period time (add the build up play if it is important or if you are involved, but keep the clip to the length of where you are involved).
- Include clips of you lifting weights.
- Put any music over the video. Also mute any background noise on the video unless it is needed (e.g. showing leadership and good communication).
Outfield players:
- Goals, assists, successful set pieces
- Range of passing
- Heading
- Shooting
- Tackling
- Touch
- Physicality/Strength
- Technique
- Positioning
- Speed
- Communication/leadership
Goalkeepers
- Handling
- Diving technique (low, mid & high heights)
- Footwork/technique
- Shot stopping ability
- Reaction ability
- Distribution – throws & kicks
- Communication
- For Goalkeepers game footage is a must, but it is also important for you to add in training drills where you face many reps at once, refer to video for examples of drills to include.
When editing your highlight video, you can
either choose to do it yourself using software such as iMovie (you will need a
Mac) or Windows Movie Player. YouTube has a lot of tutorials on how you can do
this. You can also find our iMovie how to guide here. Alternatively, you can use websites such
as Fiverr and employ the services of a freelance video editor.
We can recommend the below editors on Fiverr to edit your video.
- Hamzakk111
- Mtayyabse
- Sajeeb_karmaker
You will need to send a note like the below to the
editor. They will likely send you further instructions with exactly the
information they need to make your video.
Hi, I am a soccer player and need my film editing to
make a highlight video between 3 and 5 minutes long. I am wearing colour/number
on each video. Please can you highlight me during the play.
Below are good examples of highlight
videos.
Once your video
is complete, upload it to YouTube and send the link to your placement person
