How to film your highlight video

Your video is a very important tool when presenting you to an American coach. It is the easiest way for a coach to see you in action and something that they will ask for to evaluate if you will qualify for any scholarship on their team. Coaches of course want to see who they are investing their money in, and they will ask for video material, regardless of how impressive your mini-CV is.

A highlight video is an edited video that shows only snippets of you in action over multiple different games/events. You want to include as many different clips as possible that represent your talent and skills as a player/athlete. These clips do not need to be extremely long, they just need to show the best content of you. The more you film, the easier it will be to create a good highlight video.

Info
Your video is essentially like a CV. The coach will look at the video and within 10-30 seconds will decide if they will like you as a player!

When filming your games, we highly recommend investing in a tripod like this. It will help your video be less shaky, be smoother when moving and give coaches a better viewpoint of the game. Always film from the halfway line.

With the quality of phone cameras, there is no need to purchase a handheld camera for filming your games. It would be beneficial to go into your camera settings and ensure your phone is filming at 1080p or 4k resolution.

Coaches will sometimes ask to see a full 90-minute game. It would be helpful to film full games then take clips from these to make up your highlight video, as opposed to filming short bursts of games.

Info
If you are filming at an U18s game, you will need to get permission from the opposition team due to safeguarding rules.
