Physical preparation and pre-season

Physical preparation and pre-season

We cannot stress enough the difference in fitness levels expected in the US from what you experience at home. Many athletes massively underestimate the levels of fitness and stamina required at the college level and almost all athletes say they’ve never been fitter than when they were in college!

You must work incredibly hard before you depart to be in great physical shape and as prepared as possible for a very tough pre-season. Many teams are training two (sometimes three) times a day during the pre-season, and it is very demanding training. Moreover, it can often be hot and humid. Most likely, different conditions than what you are used to.

In the southern states, it is often around or even over, 30-35 degrees in the shade when you practice. In the more northern states, it will also be very hot during the summer, not to mention the humidity that you are not used to. We recommend that you check out the weather and climate in August. A good tip is to do your summer training when it is hottest during the day. It can make your acclimatization faster.

If you have not received a specific training schedule during the summer from your coach, ask them to get you a copy. There is fierce competition in the team, and you do not want to fall behind just because you have not trained hard well in advance of you arriving in the US.

Working for success starts NOW!
